Wild lavender fields near Gourdon medieval village in France

Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur

Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur, casually known as PACA or Region Sud, is one of the 13 administrative regions of mainland France. It’s located in the southeastern part of the country and is bordered by Italy to the east, the Mediterranean Sea and Monaco to the South, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region to the north, and Occitanie to the west. Its territory is divided into 6 departments: Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhône, Hautes-Alpes, Var, and Vaucluse. The capital city of Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur is Marseille, the second largest city in France, just after Paris.

For many, this region is most famous for the picturesque and sun-kissed towns of Cote d’Azur and enchanting Provance filled with beautiful lavender fields. There, you’ll find countless interesting places to discover but the most popular destinations include:

  • the medieval villages of Luberon,
  • filled with glamour and chic towns of the French Riviera like Nice or Saint-Tropez,
  • fashionable Cannes that hosts one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world,
  • Arles where Vincent van Gogh lived and painted,
  • Avignon with the largest Gothic palace in Europe,
  • or the spectacular Verdon Gorge often referred as the “Grand Canyon of Europe”.

No matter if you prefer to visit peaceful medieval villages, have some fun in vibrant cities, spend a relaxing time in seaside towns or nature, or just enjoy delicious French cuisine… In Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur, every traveler will find something to enjoy. This region is a place that will leave you enchanted, no matter when you visit or for what purpose.

Best time to visit

Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur has a Mediterranean climate with sunny, hot, and dry summers and mild winters. Rain isn’t very frequent in this region. If high temperatures and crowds don’t bother you – visit during the high season from June to August. If you prefer quieter times and lower temperatures, around 15-20°C, choose any month in the lower season. We think spring and autumn are the best.
