One-Day Trip Ideas In Peneda-Geres National Park, Portugal

Alto Minho

Alto Minho is one of 21 intermunicipal communities in Portugal, located in northern part of the country, between two rivers: Minho and Lima, bordering Galicia, Spain’s autonomous region. Its area coincides with Viana do Castelo District. Alto Minho is a very picturesque destination, yet not explored by many, full of lush green landscapes, small quaint historic towns, and rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re looking to relax on beautiful beaches in Viana do Castelo, stroll among narrow cobblestone streets in one of many old towns, or hit a trail in Peneda-Geres National Park – you’ll find that in Alto Minho.

Best time to visit

Alto Minho has a Mediterranean climate with warm/hot summers with temperatures around 20-25°C, and warm winters with temperatures around 10°C. All year round there is a lot of sun which makes Alto Minho a great destination at any time of the year. If crowds don’t bother you – visit during the high season from June to August. If you prefer quieter times and lower temperatures choose any month in the lower season. Personally, we think Spring and Autumn are the best.
