Catalonia is one of 17 autonomous communities in Spain, the second most populous one after Andalusia. Its territory is divided into 4 provinces: Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona and Lleida. It’s located in northeast Spain, and borders France and Andorra to the north, the Aragon community to the west, the Valencian Community to the south, and the Mediterranean Sea to the east. The capital city of Catalonia is the famous and vibrant Barcelona, Spain’s second-largest city. The official languages of Catalonia are Catalan and Spanish.
For many Catalonia is best known for Barcelona, a city brimming with architectural masterpieces by Antoni Gaudí, bustling markets, and a lively atmosphere along the famous La Rambla boulevard. But there is so much more to discover in Catalonia than its capital city! There you’ll find diverse landscapes – from the mighty Pyrenees mountains to lovely beaches, charming medieval villages and small towns, colorful festivals featuring human towers, unique traditions, wine regions, and so much more…
Catalonia’s climate is primarily Mediterranean with mild temperatures and little rain. Coastal areas are warmer, with hot summers and not-too-cold winters. Inland areas might experience cold winters with lots of snow, and summers are mild. In general, the best time to visit Catalonia depends on your preferences and places you wish to explore. If you prefer quieter times and lower temperatures choose any month in the lower season. If high temperatures and crowds don’t bother you – visit during the high season, from June to August.
