Our travel video from Evian les Bains
Short history of Evian les Bains
The story of Evian les Bains began in 1789, when French aristocrat Marquis de Lessert stopped to drink from a natural spring during a walk. He found the water “light and easily drinkable” and started to drink it regularly. After some time, to his surprise, his kidney stone problems disappeared, which he attributed to the spring water.
Soon word got out, the source became popular, and Monsieur Cachat (landowner) began selling the water. Not that long after, in 1806, the first thermal spa was opened, followed by the first bottling facility opened in 1826. In the following years, casino, hotels, and fine restaurants were built to make many aristocratic visitors happy. Finally, in 1864, the town officially became a spa town, adding “les-Bains” to its name.
Frankenstein Monster in Evian
The spa town of Evian not only welcomed countless celebrities but also… Frankensteins! In Mary Shelley’s classic novel, Evian les Bains is a place where Victor Frankenstein (the creator of the monster) and his wife Elizabeth, decided to spend their honeymoon. But unfortunately, their romantic escape turns dark quickly – during the stormy night, while Victor left the room for a while, a monster broke in and… strangled Elizabeth and escaped. Dreadful!
Now that you know a bit of the town’s history (and one spooky literary fact), it’s time to discover all the best things to do in Evian les Bains. Let’s go!
