Things To Do In Sete France - Canals, Beaches & Views

Things to do in Sete in one day

Canals of Sete

Sete was built in the 1660s as the endpoint of the Canal du Midi, a 240-kilometer-long artificial waterway that connects the Garonne River to the Mediterranean Sea. And the network of canals it left behind is still the heart of the town, its defining feature.

While wandering along Sete’s canals, you’ll pass colorful facades, fishing boats, impressive bridges, and waterfront restaurants and cafés. You don’t need a plan here – just start walking along and let the canals guide you.

And if you want to see the town from a different perspective, book a short boat tour from the port, where several local operators offer canal cruises. Whether you explore on foot or from the water, discovering canals is, without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Sete on a day trip.

The Sète Tourist Office is located on Grand Rue Mario Roustan, very close to the main canal, and just a few steps from the port. It’s a great place to pick up maps and get helpful sightseeing tips.

Sete Port

The port is one of the best places in Sete to experience its strong maritime character. As you stroll along the waterfront, you’ll see everything from small colorful fishing boats to larger vessels, with fishermen and locals going about their daily routines.

Also, don’t miss the large square at the end of the pier, home to the Saint Louis Lighthouse (which you can climb for scenic views for a small fee), and the large Sete letters sign. It’s a wonderful spot for a quick photo with the port and the town in the background. There are also plenty of restaurants nearby, making it a great place to stop for a drink or fresh seafood.

Travel tip. Right above the marina, you’ll also find the Museum Of The Sea with interesting exhibits dedicated to the town’s maritime traditions. Right next door is the Marine Cemetery – a scenic resting place with breathtaking views over the sea.

Pointe Courte – Old Fishermen’s Quarter

Another of the best things to do in Sete in one day is exploring its oldest fishing neighborhood, Pointe Courte. It’s definitely the most fascinating and authentic neighbourhood in the town. Narrow alleys, brightly painted houses, interesting street art, and fishing nets drying along the waterfront give it a lived-in, working charm that’s very different from the more polished canal-front streets.

Thankfully, despite becoming popular with visitors, Pointe Courte has managed to retain much of its authenticity. Take your time, wander without a plan, and just enjoy the neighborhood’s unique vibe.

Sete Upper District

Sete’s Upper District, climbing the slopes of Mont Saint-Clair, is where the town’s character really shows. At its heart, you’ll find the Saint-Louis Church, a Baroque parish church built in the early 1700s, one of the oldest buildings in town.

But what makes this part of Sète particularly fun to explore is its street art. As you wander through the streets, you’ll come across colorful and interesting works tucked between ordinary front doors and staircases. Don’t worry about following a specific route – just get a little lost, keep your eyes open, and let the neighborhood surprise you. It’s such a fun thing to do in Sete.

Mont Saint-Clair viewpoint

For the best view in Sète, head up Mont Saint-Clair, which rises 175 m a.s.l. From the top, you’ll get a breathtaking panorama over the Mediterranean Sea on one side and the Thau Lagoon on the other, with the town’s canals laid out below like a map.

While you’re here, don’t miss the 19th-century Chapel of Our Lady of La Salette, located right next to the viewpoint. It’s decorated with colorful frescoes and maritime ex-votos, reflecting Sète’s strong connection with the sea and its fishing community.

You can reach Mont Saint-Clair by car, but you can also walk up from the town center. The climb is fairly steep in places, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes. Either way, visiting this viewpoint is one of the most scenic things to do in Sete, not to be missed during one day in town.

Pierres Blanches Forest

If you need a break from the water, head up to the Forêt des Pierres Blanches, a surprising little pine and garrigue forest sitting on the slopes of Mont Saint-Clair.

The forest is crisscrossed by easy walking paths, making it a lovely place for a relaxing stroll and a great addition to your list of things to do in Sete in one day. As you walk, you’ll also find several viewpoints offering stunning views over the sea, the lagoon, and the coastline.

There’s a small parking area at the entrance, but it’s just as easy to reach on foot or by local bus from the town center. Entrance to the Pierres Blanches Forest is free during opening hours.

One day in Sete France – Summing up

So there you have it, Sète in a nutshell. Picturesque canals instead of car-filled streets, hilltop views that rival anywhere on the coast, and authentic neighbourhoods that haven’t been polished away for tourists. We hope this one day in Sete travel guide inspires you to add it to your southern France travel plans. Enjoy!

Our opinion about Sete

For us, a visit to Sete was a day trip from nearby La Grande Motte where we lived for a few weeks. We visited in mid April, and during that time the town was free from tourist crowds, although there were many more visitors than we expected. Exploring everything we wanted took us about 6 hours.

What surprised us most was how different Sète felt from the other postcard-perfect towns of southern France. We enjoyed strolling around the canals – they reminded us a little of those in Annecy or Port Grimaud. But what we liked most was admiring the scenic views from Mont Saint-Clair and Pierres Blanches Forest – visiting these two places was definitely the highlight of our day in Sete.
