Travelers Talks: Secrets Behind Successful Travelers

Some time ago on Twitter and Facebook, we asked our fellow travelers a few questions to clarify the topic, and here’s what we got in return.

Write a few words about yourself – who you are, and how you travel.

My name is Hanit, and I am a New York based professional that loves to travel. I have lived in New York since 1999, and this truly is home for me now. I love all things New York, and have evolved to become the go to person for anyone looking for things to do, eat, drink and experience in New York. I have been using #gottalovenewyork on my social media posts for years, and recently started a blog called Gotta Love New York.

I am an avid traveler, and work towards having a trip on my calendar in the future, even if it is for a weekend. I have found travel to be the best learning experience of all, and appreciate how it always expands my horizons. My personal goal is to visit one new country a year, and am equally happy to plan solo travel or a family trip to explore new lands. I have discovered a love for adventure sports through my travels, and two memorable experiences are hang gliding in Rio de Janeiro, and paragliding in Cape Town.

I choose to stay tuned in to the world around me, and believe it is important to be thoughtful in all you do given the times we are living in.

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

I believe a successful traveler is one that truly enjoys travel for the experience they are seeking from it.

Travel translates to different things for different people, and could for instance range from budget to luxury or solo to group or actively exploring to lounging on a beach. While there are no right or wrong choices in any of these, a successful traveler would be one that chooses a trip that resonates with them, and travels with people that are on the same wavelength from both a travel and a budget perspective.

For me, a successful travel experience is a culturally immersive one to a place I have not visited before. This could be as close as a neighboring town or to a new country or continent, as long as I have the opportunity to expand my horizons beyond their current reality and experiences.

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

To be a successful traveler, it is important to research where you are going, plan for it, be prepared for your chosen travel experience, manage your risks, embrace the local culture and be open to new experiences.

My travel ranges all the way from solo trips to big groups as we love to travel as a family with three generations, and these require very different kinds of planning. In all instances, understanding and experiencing the local culture and food is a given.

A successful solo trip for me requires a lot more planning as safety comes first when I am traveling alone. I always choose to stay at a hotel and for my days to be very full to cover as much ground as I can in a new place.

On the other hand, when traveling as a family, we plan a pace and itinerary that is of interest to everyone, and we always stay in vacation rentals to make the most of the quality time that we get with each other.

Finish the sentence: “Behind Every Successful Traveler is…”

… a passion to keep expanding your horizons through new cultures and experiences.

Write a few words about yourself – who you are, and how you travel.

I’m a New York City full time paramedic who travels the world part-time. I travel by finding the best deals and take the leap. I’ve stayed at both a high-end hotel and a 20 person dorm. I just try to make the most of the time I have while away in a new country. I’ve been to over 25 countries in 10 years and I love exploring a new place.

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

The sign of a successful traveler is one who embraces the journey as much as the destination. This person is adaptable, open-minded, and curious. I believe they learned to deal with unexpected changes and use these experiences as opportunities for growth. They soak up the local culture. They become a temporary resident rather than a fleeting tourist. They respect local customs and traditions, enriching their own perspectives while contributing positively to the local community.

A successful traveler also values sustainable practices. The successful traveler prepares meticulously but also welcomes spontaneity. Their success isn’t measured by the number of countries they’ve visited, but by the depth of their understanding and their capacity for wonder and appreciation.

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

What is needed to be a successful traveler is someone with a keen sense of adventure, who is open-minded, and knows what abilities they have to handle what lies ahead. They know how to turn the challenges they face into opportunities for growth. What is also needed to be a successful traveler is someone who knows how to maintain respect for their environment and the local communities they’re in, embracing the call for sustainable tourism. They need to know how to embrace the rich and rewarding experiences they’ve had. It’s pretty important that they also need to have a sense of humor, because humor is how the world moves.

I’m Gladis. I’ve traveled to over 20 countries to date, exploring off-the-beaten paths, trying exciting local adventures, and immersing myself in mindful activities. I started traveling as a form of escape from overworking and responsibilities in life. Along the way, I’ve discovered that travel is a way to experience life. I’m in awe, I’m at peace, and I’m happy. I share my stories and tips on my blog, ‘Happiness on the Way,’ to inspire others to rediscover joy through travel.

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

A successful traveler is someone who has discovered what type of trips suit them and goes for these trips despite what the mainstream media promotes.

It can be backpacking trips or luxury ones (or something in between), food or cultural, wellness or adventure. It can involve traveling to famous iconic tourist spots or off-the-beaten path destinations.

It can be done as a solo traveler, with a partner, with strangers, or with friends. It can be for a weekend, a few months, or even years. It can be financed through personal savings, as a form of work, or through promotions.

A successful traveler is someone who delves deeper into what’s important, what’s authentic, and what is meaningful for them. They find a trip that matches these criteria, make it work in a sustainable way, and continue to discover these aspects through their journeys.

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

Though there are several considerations to becoming a successful traveler, here are three important ones that I find helpful for my own trips:

Define your travel goals. What do you want to experience? What activities do you want to partake in? Do you want to see as much as possible, or do you prefer a more relaxing experience? Defining your travel goals will help you choose a destination and guide you as you craft your itinerary.

Define your travel budget. You don’t want to feel guilty after all the fun! Think ahead how much you are happily willing to spend so that you can choose accommodations, transportation, food, and activities that match your budget.

Define your pace and stick to it. Many times, when we arrive at a new destination, we want to pack our schedule with as many activities as possible, only to end up feeling more tired after the trip and not truly experiencing the place due to constant rushing. Choose a pace that works for you and adjust accordingly.

Finish the sentence: “Behind Every Successful Traveler is…”

… a soul that seeks to express itself through a trip that holds meaning, authenticity, and significance to the traveler.

Write a few words about yourself – who you are, and how you travel.

After experiencing chronic burnout, I left my home in Seattle for a six-month sabbatical in 2019. That sabbatical soon became full-time traveling on a shoestring with my partner, Seva. Along the way, I learned how to house sit, how to live with less (and more), and how my whole life had been autistic. Suddenly, my love of travel made sense. So did all my challenges. We’ve now been full-time nomads for four years, carrying all of our belongings in 2 carry-on suitcases and 2 small backpacks.

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

Being a successful traveler depends on your idea of success: are you traveling to relax, live in a community, for health, to visit family and friends, or simply for a change of scene? Whatever your reasons for travel, setting your intentions and clarifying your ‘why’ will help. Your ‘why’ doesn’t need to be a lofty goal. For example, if you’re traveling for work with a hectic schedule, let go of the pressure to be a tourist seeing the sights. On the flip side, if you’re traveling to see the sights, let go of work! If you ask what makes an unsuccessful traveler, it’s probably someone who has unclear expectations of their travels or is trying to do too much at once. Being mindful is key.

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

Once you’re clear on your ‘why’ for a trip, the next step is to become a mindful packer. Why? Because it’s the invisible support structure for your trip. Imagine you’re going to a work conference and pack beachwear. Or you’re going to the beach and you pack work clothes. You’re going to be uncomfortable the whole time. While many people—including myself—believe that minimalist packing is the way to go, it might not be for you. However, if you think carefully about what you’re putting in your suitcase or backpack, one item at a time, it will probably help you avoid overpacking.

Finish the sentence: “Behind Every Successful Traveler is…”

… a mindful packer.

Write a few words about yourself – who you are, and how you travel.

I have a traditional career in corporate America with limited time off. Due to limited PTO (*personal time off), we have to be very strategic when planning trips. While my husband and I plan for holiday travel far in advance we also leave room for spontaneous trips throughout the year. It is the best of both worlds.

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

In my eyes, a successful traveler is someone who travels every other month to incredible destinations on a budget while also maintaining a fantastic career. Yeah, it’s a tall order. I think that is what makes them so successful though. The skills and strategy it takes to find reasonably priced plane tickets and accommodations to keep frequent travel affordable is a job of its own. A successful traveler must be a “jack of all trades”. They need to be able to plan out an adventure far in advance as well as be ready to hop on an airplane next weekend. They take every travel opportunity they can (within reason of course).

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

A successful traveler is someone who is content planning a year in advance for multi-day itineraries as well as hopping on a flight for a last minute weekend trip because there was a flight deal. Being a combination of these two “type a” and “spontaneous” personalities allows you to be budget conscious while also adventure driven. The “type a” personality will plan out an incredible 10 day itinerary for next summer while finding the best deals and accommodations. The “spontaneous” personality will hop on the last minute flight to a beach and book any random hotel because there was a sale. Only having one of these personalities will cause you to miss out on exciting travel opportunities and memories that will last a lifetime.

Write a few words about yourself – who you are, and how you travel.

Although I prefer to travel more comfortably the older I get, I still prefer to travel pretty light. I figure if I forget something, I can get it wherever I am going. I also love to feel and look more like a local than a foreigner when I travel, especially if it is the first time I am headed somewhere.

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

To me, a successful traveler looks like someone who is aware of the culture they are traveling to. When I moved abroad, of course, there was no way for me to know all the things but I think one of the things that really helped was the ability to be observant of the culture around me and to adapt to it. I think another important piece is learning a few words before you go. My last major trip I didn’t feel nearly as successful because I was headed to 5 different Southeast Asian countries and I just didn’t have the capacity before to learn language like normally I would and I could feel the difference.

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

I think it is important to go into a new culture with humility and a heart to learn. I grew up in a Western context and sometimes it seems like we can go into places thinking we are the best and everyone should learn our language. That hurts your connections you make on your journey. It hurts your capacity to grow as a human. Going into a new country realizing that you are not the expert, regardless of how much you have researched, is quite humbling. But when you go in with humility, you become a new person. Each country I have been to has deposited something different in me and I am better for it, but also a local person is blessed by that same humility.

… a heart to learn.

After traveling outside of the US for the first time while studying abroad, Sydney quickly developed a love for travel and an obsession for exploring as much of the world as possible. Now, she’s on a mission to teach college students, young adults, and anyone else who wants to see the world how to travel while minimizing their expenses and maximizing their experiences.

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

I believe that a successful traveler is one who comes home from their travels with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the destination they visited. Successful travelers embrace the new experiences and perspectives that come when traveling to a new destination, and yearn to get out of their comfort zone while on a trip. They aim to make a meaningful connection with their destination, whether that be through conversations with the locals, trying authentic cuisine, or visiting the historical sites and landmarks that the destination is known for. To be a successful traveler, it doesn’t matter if you travel on a budget or luxuriously, or for a short trip or a long one – you just need to have a sense of curiosity and a desire to learn.

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

To me, the most important thing that a successful traveler can have is a sense of curiosity and an interest in learning more about the world around them. One of my favorite things about traveling is the abundant learning experiences that come with exploring a new destination. Whether you’re visiting a museum or a historical site that you once learned about in a history textbook, or taking a cooking class to learn how to prepare the local cuisine for yourself, there’s always something to learn. Curious travelers who seek out these experiences are able to gain knowledge and a better understanding of the destination’s culture, which will often stick long after the trip is over.

Write a few words about yourself – who you are, and how you travel.

Hi, I’m Alison and I live in the United Arab Emirates. There’s nothing I love more than exploring new places, especially quiet, natural spots. My current favorite place to explore is Oman. I mostly travel by car and find it gives me access to lots of places I would miss without a car, especially those interesting looking side roads and off-road tracks. I’d love to hire a good bike too that can get to even more places!

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

A successful traveler is someone who does their research before traveling and makes notes and a plan of where they want to visit and what they want to do and see, places to eat, etc., but also allows for flexibility and unexpected opportunities. A traveler with a crammed, strict itinerary will miss out on discovering great places and things to do that were not on their pre-travel reading list. A successful traveler strikes a balance between planned routes and activities and time for spontaneity. So, they have a well-organized folder with plans, maps, information, tickets, etc. and also a loose schedule with both planned activities and empty slots.

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

To be a successful traveler, you should have a sense of curiosity as this is what will lead you to hidden gems and authentic experiences. A sense of curiosity to try new things like new food, new means of transport, new activities or to go down random roads can open up a whole new world and sometimes show you a different perspective.

At times, you need courage to go off the popular routes, but of course, keeping safety in mind too. Courage and spontaneity to start up conversations with locals and join in local events can help you to see another side of the country or culture that you may not have seen and can also result in tips of unexplored places to visit.

Write a few words about yourself – who you are, and how you travel.

My husband, Justin, and I are full-time travel bloggers. We live in an RV full-time and travel in it all across North America. While we’re kind of professional road trippers, we also love international travel and frequently fly abroad when we find a good deal. We love exploring the outdoors, so we primarily enjoy adventure travel and hunting down the best bucket list experiences on the planet.

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

A successful traveler is someone who gets out of their travels what they’re looking for. This can obviously vary, depending on the traveler, ranging from relaxation or getting over a break-up to learning Spanish or hiking to Everest Base Camp. This usually means that the traveler will need to do some kind of research ahead of time- for example, finding an all-inclusive resort that has the amenities that they’re looking for or obtaining the appropriate permits for the trail- and being ready to pivot or problem solve, when necessary, while they’re enjoying their destination.

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

A successful traveler must be flexible. I can’t count the number of times that things go wrong when we’re traveling (since we live in an RV, we’re always traveling) and I’ve really learned to roll with the punches. For example, we recently flew for a week and a half trip to Scotland. On the way back, we missed our connecting flight from London, due to our initial flight being delayed, and were rebooked for a flight three days later. Instead of being upset about the circumstances, we tried to view it through the lens of being on an unexpected trip to London and used those three days to explore as many sights as we can. Anticipate that things will go wrong, be okay with things being slightly different than your expectations, and you’ll get so much more out of your travels!

Finish the sentence: “Behind Every Successful Traveler is…”

… the willingness to shift plans, adapt, and still have a good experience.

Write a few words about yourself – who you are, and how you travel.

Travel has been in my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up in an Armed Forces household which meant that aside from England (where I was born and live now) I lived in several places across Germany and Cyprus throughout my childhood. As a married Mum to two young boys my passion for travel is something that I share with my husband, and a passion that we’re instilling in our children. We travel as a family as often as possible, whether it’s a sun soaked holiday in Europe, an adventure trip to Australia, or a weekend camping trip in the Cotswolds.

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

I always thought a successful traveler was someone who had traveled to a lot of places and could tick countries off of a bucket list. However as I began traveling more, especially with my children, I came to the realization of what it truly means to be a successful traveler.

To me, it’s less about how many places you visit and more about having a sense of adventure to truly experience what the place you’re visiting offers. A successful traveler is someone who immerses themselves into the culture and environment they’re visiting. Someone who seeks authentic experiences and tastes traditional food to learn about the country and its local people.

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

A successful traveler should have an open mind to the different culture, food and experiences that traveling the world can bring. This doesn’t mean you need to travel the world, you could seek new experiences and food in your own country. By an open mind I don’t just mean to experience the local culture, but also in how and where you travel. I’m a planner by nature so I understand the need to have a robust travel plan in place.

However, while it’s important to have a plan, travelers should also be open to flex those plans as different opportunities or speed bumps present themselves. If you rigidly stick to a plan and allow for no spontaneity then you could end up missing out on some awesome moments. On the flip side, you could end up making the whole trip way more stressful if something just isn’t going right and you don’t pivot.

Finish the sentence: “Behind Every Successful Traveler is…”

… an open mind.

Write a few words about yourself – who you are, and how you travel.

My name is Haley Gleason. I am the founder of Gleason Family Travels which is a website that focuses on ordinary families like mine that have extraordinary travel experiences. I am the mom of two kids and my husband and I made the decision before we had children that we wanted to show our kids the world and invest in their experiences traveling. We both work full time and are bound by the same PTO restrictions and budgetary concerns that most ordinary families have when they plan family vacations. We use travel hacking with credit card points to be able to travel worldwide and throughout the United States without children. We love experiencing off the beaten path areas but also enjoy visiting high touristy sites. We understand that popular experiences are popular for a reason.

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

Is someone that is organized but flexible. Travel brings unexpected hiccups which require you to pivot. Especially when traveling with kids, you have to expect there will be snags in your original plans. You can either let these mishaps ruin your trip, or you can be flexible and change your plans to make sure that everyone still enjoys the experience. Be open to changing plans, trying new foods, and exploring off-the-beaten-path spots. Adapt to local customs and go with the flow. The key is to be prepared but willing to embrace spontaneity. Success in family travel is about creating memorable moments while being ready for anything.

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

To become a successful traveler, especially when you’re traveling with your family and kids, you’ll need a mix of smart strategies. Curiosity fuels the desire to explore new horizons, while open-mindedness enables the embracing of diverse cultures. Balancing careful planning with adaptability is key; itineraries, accommodations, and checklists should be prepared, yet flexibility should be maintained to handle unforeseen challenges.

Patience is a successful traveler’s best friend, especially when things don’t go as smoothly as you’d like. Show respect to the people and cultures you encounter, and communicate effectively, even if it’s just a few words in the local language. And always being prepared for whatever might come your way, stay adaptable. Most importantly a successful traveler will try to savor every moment of your journey, even when things get a little rough.

Write a few words about yourself – who you are, and how you travel.

I’m Amber – a world traveler and current expat. I started traveling when I was in college with a trip to Guatemala, and I have since traveled as often as possible. I love to visit places both on and off the tourist track because I feel they both have a lot to offer. My travel style is budget-friendly, with an eye towards great food, interesting architecture, and/or outdoor activities.

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

Successful travelers are the people who pack their bags and hit the road when the opportunity presents itself. In my view, it doesn’t matter how many countries you’ve visited or people you’ve met. If you’ve conquered the fear of the unknown and found yourself in a new, unfamiliar place, you’re on the right track.

Sometimes life offers the opportunity to travel and all you need to do is say “yes,” and sometimes you have to create the opportunities yourself. Most of us will experience a mix of both. So long as you’re saying, “yes!” to travel whenever you can, stepping outside of your comfort zone, and finding yourself in places unknown (to you), you’re a successful traveler in my book.

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

To be a successful traveler, you need to get in the habit of seizing opportunities as they come your way. For many people in the US, one of the first opportunities to travel and live abroad is through their college’s study abroad program.

It’s normal to be scared to study abroad. For most college students, studying abroad is one of the first experiences they’ll have living in a new country or practicing speaking a new language. Becoming a successful traveler is all about taking risks, and studying abroad is a great time to try out traveling in a new way while still enjoying the structure of a college or university program.

Write a few words about yourself – who you are, and how you travel.

As an avid traveler, I find joy in exploring new cities, interacting with locals, and fully engaging in the unique essence of every place I visit. I’ve been to 39 countries and have experienced so much in those countries, from vibrant urban centers to serene coastal retreats. I slow travel and city hop quickly, depending on the trip!

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

A successful traveler is someone who gets to know the city beyond tourist centers and attractions. Successful travelers make an effort to learn about the cultures, history, and traditions of the places they visit. They speak to locals and participate in unique experiences while keeping an open mind. Successful travelers respect the customs of the places they visit. They dine at local restaurants to taste the native food. Successful travelers shop in local businesses.

A successful traveler leaves a place better than they found it. Stimulating the local economy, providing a friendly acquaintance to locals, volunteering in the community, and being respectful to the environment.

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

Being a successful traveler requires a plan. This doesn’t mean you need to have an itinerary and plan activities for every day. A general plan works. Where will you fly into? Where will you stay when you first arrive? What are the activities that you’d like to do? How much money are you able to spend? Some will research and plan more than others. And, some will show up at a destination and travel as they go.

My name is Sam and I love traveling with my husband and 3 kids. I live in Yorkshire in the UK and we have mainly enjoyed road trips over the years and our favorite was when we traveled to 8 European countries in one summer with a tent and an instant pot.

In your eyes, who a successful traveler is?

A successful traveler is someone that has been to many places and experienced a lot of different cultures and has a lot of experience. With experience comes with knowing what you need to pack, how to keep your items safe, knowing which excursions are worth going on and which ones are not. Knowing what time of the year to visit and being able to research the important parts of the holiday and not be in a total panic. Most of all a successful traveler is an organized traveler and one that wants to experience new things but doesn’t want the little things to get in the way along the journey.

In your opinion, what is needed to be a successful traveler?

A successful traveler is an organized traveler. The one that has the itinerary planned out, knows the best places to go to, the one that doesn’t arrive at the airport missing their passport, the one that knows that things don’t always go perfect so don’t plan excursions for right at the end or right at the start of the holiday. But with every organized traveler there is an unorganized traveler with them to add some fun and balance to the trip. Then together they can do the organized day out that they have always wanted, along with the fun at random travel moments that make for a great holiday.
