Castle of Cullera

Unquestionably, the number one thing to do in Cullera is to visit the Moorish fortress, Castell de Cullera. It sits atop the mountain (at the altitude of about 230m a.s.l), carefully watching over the coastline, town, and the surroundings.

The Castle of Cullera was built in the 10th century by Moors, and later rebuilt in the 13th century after the Christian reconquest, and in the 16th century to help with the fight against Barbary pirates. It once featured defensive walls, but these were destroyed over the centuries, and only some of the towers remained, like the Tower of the Moorish Queen or the Octagonal Tower.

Inside the Castle of Cullera, you can wander around its grounds, visit a small Municipal Museum of History and Archaeology and castle chambers, see a short video about the history of Cullera, and climb the walls and tower. But what’s most important – enjoy incredible views of Cullera and its surroundings from various places around.

Nowadays, the castle is also used as the venue for all sorts of cultural events, like theater shows, classical music concerts, exhibitions, or dance performances.

How to get to Cullera Castle?

Here you have three options. You can hike, drive, or use a tourist train. If nothing stands in the way, choose a hike to the castle via zigzagging Calvary path (es. Camíno del Calvario) dotted with stunning views, places to rest, and Stations of the Cross. Along it, you’ll pass by the pretty Tower of the Moorish Queen.

If you decide to drive up, keep in mind that parking at the top is quite small, and there might be issues with finding a place during touristy times of the year. In the high season, there is also a tourist train available from the town, which will take you to the parking lot under the castle. From the parking lot, there is also a funicular available to the castle/church grounds for those who aren’t able to climb some stairs.

What’s more, right next to the parking lot, you’ll find Mirador del Castell featuring canons, striking views over the coast, town, and one of the remaining towers – the unique-looking Octagonal Tower. As you can see, it’s not without a reason that exploring the castle is the best thing to do in Cullera, be sure not to miss it!

Entrance to the Castle of Cullera costs €3.6 for a normal ticket, and €1.2 for a reduced one (May 2025). There is also an audio guide available in 6 languages. You can buy tickets either at the ticket office or online in advance. For current prices, opening hours, and online tickets, visit spainheritagenetwork.com website.

Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Castle

While on Cullera Castle grounds, be sure to visit the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Castle (es. Santuario de la Virgen del Castillo de Cullera). It’s a serene church located behind the castle, built in the late 19th century in Neo-Romanesque style. It’s dedicated to the town’s patron saint and features a striking bell tower with a copper-tiled dome. Sanctuary is definitely worth taking a quick look at, especially since the entrance is free during opening hours.

Barri del Pou Neighborhood

If you decide to reach the castle by Calvary path, you will for sure go through the most picturesque Cullera neighborhood – Barri del Pou. It’s one of Cullera’s oldest and most atmospheric quarters (originally the Jewish quarter during the Islamic period), nestled between the Municipal Market in the old town and the castle.

There you’ll find a maze of narrow alleys full of whitewashed houses often decorated with beautiful, colorful flowers. Wandering through the Barri del Pou offers a glimpse into the town’s past and is definitely one of the best things to do in Cullera.

Beaches in Cullera

We think that no one needs to be convinced that Costa de Valencia is a summer beach paradise. We also think that one of the best things to do in Cullera includes spending some time on one of its amazing beaches.

Along the Cullera’s over 15-kilometer-long coastline, you’ll find some great beaches, perfect for soaking up the sun and taking a refreshing dip in Mediterranean waters. The choice of sandy spots is wide, from lively family-friendly shores to quieter, more secluded coves.

Cool facts about Cullera beaches? All have been declared smoke-free, and some of them have been awarded the Blue Flag!

If you prefer urban beaches with many amenities around, choose beaches like Playa de San Antonio (Cullera main beach) or Playa del Racó. Looking for a more peaceful choice? Playa Marenyet, Platja Marenyet de l’Illa, or Playa de L’Estany will be perfect!

Are you a watersports lover? Take a look at Plage Cap Blanc or Playa Dossel. And if you want to enjoy sun, sand, and water without your clothes on, Platja del Mareny de Sant Llorenç is waiting for you!

Seafront Promenade

Fancy a walk? Cullera promenade is about 2 km long, a palm-lined walkway that stretches along the town’s main beaches, Playa de San Antonio and Platja del Racó. It’s the perfect place for a leisurely stroll or jog with sea views on one side and shops, restaurants, orxaterias, and residential buildings on the other.

If you’re looking for the Cullera Tourist Office, you’ll find it along the promenade, above Playa de San Antonio on Plaça Constitució square.

Travel tip. After reaching the end of the promenade, near Hotel Sicania, you can continue the walk and reach San Antonio Cape and the area around the lighthouse.

Cullera old town

Here, by Cullera old town, we’ll refer to the part of the town located just below the Barri del Pou neighborhood. It’s mostly a residential area that feels worlds away from the modern beachfront and the uphill castle. It might not be too spectacular, but if you want to soak up Cullera’s authentic local life, it’s the perfect place.

There you’ll find a few points of interest like the vibrant square of Plaza de España with the Town Hall, the 17th century Parish Church of Santos Juanes, and the Municipal Market. Of course, many restaurants, cafes, and tapas bars are waiting there too.

Fallas Museum

And if you’re looking for a unique thing to do in Cullera, be sure to head to Fallas Museum (es. Museo Fallero), which offers a glimpse into one of Valencia’s most iconic traditions – Las Fallas. Inside this small museum, you’ll learn about the history of the festival, admire displays of pardoned ninots (figures saved from the flames), and see photos from past celebrations. You’ll even experience the sound of a mascletà, a signature pyrotechnic spectacle of rhythmic firecracker detonations. For more information, current prices, and opening hours, visit visit-cullera.es website.

San Antonio Cape

San Antonio Cape is an area in Cullera located about 5 kilometres from the old town. It offers nice views of the Mediterranean and the town’s coastline and is home to the Cullera Lighthouse that has guided sailors since the 19th century. Unfortunately, you can’t visit it, but the views from its surroundings are well worth the trip.

Nearby beaches, like Platja de l’Illa or Plage Cap Blanc, offer a peaceful experience – they are perfect for those seeking a quieter spot to relax in Cullera.

In San Antonio Cape, you’ll also find Mirador Far de Cullera providing even more spectacular views and an interesting sculpture of two hands reaching out to the sky (named Memorial “La defensa de Cullera”).

Looking for more interesting things to do in Cullera? Head to the Dragut Cave Museum located just a few steps from the viewpoint. It’s set within a cave, historically linked to the infamous 16th-century Turkish pirate Dragut, who once raided the Valencian coast. Inside, you’ll explore exhibits showcasing maritime artifacts, historical weaponry, and detailed accounts of pirate incursions that impacted the region.

Torre del Marenyet

Torre del Marenyet is a historic circular watchtower located near the mouth of the Júcar River in Cullera. It was built in the 16th century and was part of a coastal defense system designed to protect the Valencian coast from frequent pirate attacks, particularly after the devastating raid carried out by (already mentioned) Dragut in 1550.

Today, the Torre del Marenyet is restored and transformed into a small museum offering interesting insights into the tower’s historical significance and the maritime defense strategies of the era.

The tower is located about 3 kilometres outside Cullera old town, right above Playa Marenyet. You can easily get there by car, bike, or on foot. To be honest, we’re not sure about buses – can’t find reliable information as public transport options are limited in this area – check with the Cullera Tourist Office.

Things to do in Cullera, Spain – Summing up

And that’s a wrap on our choice of great things to do in Cullera! We hope you’ll have an amazing time in this charming coastal town, no matter if you visit for a beach holiday or a day trip from Valencia. Whether you’re planning to soak up the sun on the beach, wander through history at the castle, or simply enjoy the relaxed Mediterranean vibe, Cullera is a place to slow down and savor every moment. Enjoy!

Our opinion about Cullera

We lived in Cullera for 6 weeks (mid-February – end of March), in the San Antonio Cape area, to be exact. During that time, the town was very quiet without many tourists around. Beaches, promenade, and old town streets were filled mostly with locals enjoying quieter times of the year. For us, it was a relaxing time after weeks in the vibrant Benidorm.

Overall, Cullera didn’t really resonate with us, but we definitely can see why this place is a popular holiday spot – beaches are indeed amazing! Long, wide, sandy, with calm waters and less busy than the other ones nearby… Holidaymakers’ dream! We also enjoyed the castle and the fantastic views from it. Cullera was also a good starting point for discovering the area near Valencia.
