Denia, Spain FAQ
Denia is a Spanish coastal town located in the Province of Alicante on the Mediterranean coast known as Costa Blanca. It’s midway between Alicante and Valencia, directly opposite Ibiza and other Balearic Islands.
Of course! It’s a destination that has it all – interesting history, excellent gastronomy, great beaches, magnificent natural beauty, pleasant climate, vibrant atmosphere, and plenty of sites to explore. What’s more, Denia is yet not as popular as nearby Costa Blanca towns so if you are looking for a slightly quieter destination this one will be perfect for you.
Denia is best known for the castle perched on a small hill offering spectacular panoramic views over the town and its surroundings. The town is also recognized for its culinary scene (fresh seafood and traditional Valencian dishes) and was named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
Hard to say, it depends on your preferences! Both are nice coastal towns on Costa Blanca with great beaches, but they offer different vibes. Denia is bigger and offers more activities so we think it’ll be great for those looking for a mix of relaxation, fun, history, and vibrant local life. Javea is more relaxed, perfect for those looking for a quieter escape. We prefer Denia but it’s best to visit both towns and form your own opinion.

Denia Castle
One of the best things to do in Denia is to visit the Caste (es. Castell de Dénia) which sits at the top of the small hill overlooking the town and its surroundings. It was built by Moors during the 11th and 12th centuries and for hundreds of years served as a defensive fortress to protect the city against various threats.
Nowadays, most of the castle no longer exists but its remains and the surrounding walls look quite impressive – especially from afar, from the port area. While strolling around the castle grounds you’ll find many informative panels (unfortunately only in Spanish), a small Archeological Museum with historical artifacts on display, a cafe, toilets, and some picnic areas perfect to sit and rest for a moment.

But the main reason to visit Denia Castle is definitely the views. From various viewpoints magnificent views await. You can admire the town, port, Mediterranean Sea coast, beaches, Montgo mountain, and more. You can easily feel like the watchmen from centuries ago watching out for the enemies!
Entrance to Denia Castle costs €3 for adults and €1 for children 8-16 (February 2025). To check out current opening hours visit denia.es website. You’ll need around 1 hour to explore the castle.

Port of Denia
Another great thing to do in Denia is visit its port, Marina de Dénia. It’s an amazing place for a leisurely walk among small boats and yachts or to enjoy waterfront dining with great views. And talking about views again – in our opinion there is no better place to admire Denia Castle. Apparently, the town council thinks that too as they even put a special photo frame there!
From Port of Denia you can also take a ferry to the Balearic Islands or choose to go on a shorter excursion like this Daytime or Sunset Catamaran Cruise or this Boat Trip & Parasailing Experience with Sunset Option. There you can also rent equipment for water sports like sailing or kayaking.

Baix la Mar Neighbourhood
Right between Denia Castle and Port, you’ll find one of the most emblematic town’s neighborhoods – Baix la Mar. It’s the old fisherman quarter nowadays full of colorful houses and traditional restaurants serving authentic local dishes. For example, you can try Denia red prawn or dried octopus.
In Baix la Mar neighborhood be sure to visit squares like Plaça de Mariana Pineda, Plaça de Sant Antoni, Plaça de la Creu (with an interesting Playmobil sculpture), or Plaza de Mariana Pineda. Not far, you’ll also find the famous Els Magazinos – a bustling food court full of restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Our video from Denia
Our opinion about Denia
For us, a visit to Denia was a day trip from Benidorm where we lived for a few weeks. We visited the town in late January and during that time there weren’t many tourists, but the town didn’t seem to be abandoned either. Most of the restaurants, shops, and attractions were open and locals seemed to be enjoying a peaceful time before high season.
We really enjoyed our day in Denia. Our expectations weren’t set high but the town took us by surprise and quickly became one of our favorite places on Costa Blanca, definitely in TOP3! We especially loved the views from the castle and strolling around the port. Denia resonated with us and for sure we’ll consider staying there for longer in the future.
Exploring everything we wanted took us about 6 or 7 hours. At first, we wanted to connect this trip with a visit to Xabia but there were so many things to do in Denia that we didn’t manage to do so.
