Abbey of Saint-Roman, France FAQ

Where is Abbey of Saint-Roman located?

The Abbey of Saint-Roman is located in the town of Beaucaire in the Gard department of Occitanie in Southern France. It sits on a limestone hill overlooking the Rhône Valley, between Avignon and Arles, only about 30 minutes from both.

Is Abbey of Saint-Roman worth visiting?

Yes, without a doubt! Saint Roman Abbey is one of the most fascinating historical sites in Southern France. But don’t expect a grand cathedral with soaring ceilings and stained glass. This abbey is raw, peaceful, and unusual. And offers wonderful panoramic views from the top!

What is Saint-Roman Abbey known for?

The Abbey of Saint-Roman is best known for being the only fully troglodyte abbey in Western Europe. Here, everything was dug directly into the limestone and the most striking feature is the rooftop necropolis where hundreds of graves were cut into the flat rock!

How long do you need in Abbey of Saint-Roman?

Plan to spend about 1.5 hours visiting the Saint-Roman Abbey. That includes roughly a 15-minute walk from the car park, 30 to 60 minutes exploring the monastery, and some extra time to relax on the terrace and soak in the breathtaking views.

A short history of the Abbey of Saint-Roman

Thanks to many natural caves in the limestone, the hill was used for shelter and lookout point since prehistoric times. The abbey’s story began around the 5th century, when monks settled in the caves to live a secluded monastic life. By the 8th century, the community had grown into a Benedictine abbey, which later expanded into an important place of pilgrimage and learning.

In the 16th century, the monks abandoned the site, and it was later sold to a private owner who built a small castle on top of the old abbey. The fortress was dismantled in the early 19th century, leaving behind only fragments of its walls.

Blending seamlessly into the limestone cliffs, the abbey remained largely forgotten until archaeological excavations began in the 1960s. The town of Beaucaire purchased the site in 1988, and it was officially listed as a Historic Monument in 1991.

Visiting Abbey of Saint-Roman

Exploring the troglodyte monastery of Saint-Roman is obviously the highlight of the visit. As you wander through its maze-like interior, you’ll discover the chapel, monks’ cells, cisterns, storage silos, and even an old wine press – all carved directly into the limestone. It’s such a fascinating place where one room seems to lead seamlessly into the next.

Don’t miss climbing up to the upper terrace, where you’ll find the abbey’s most haunting feature: a necropolis with hundreds of coffin-shaped graves carved into the flat rock. Many of them collect rainwater, creating a beautiful mirror-like effect on sunny days.

But honestly, the views were our favourite part! From the top, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking panorama over the Rhône Valley, the Alpilles, and the surrounding countryside. The terraces also make a lovely picnic spot if you’d like to stay a little longer – just remember there are no facilities on-site, so bring everything you’ll need.

Our opinion about Abbey of Saint-Roman

For us, a visit to the Abbey of Saint-Roman was a day trip from Orgon where we lived for a few weeks. We combined it with exploring the nearby Pont du Gard and Uzes. We visited in early June, and during that time the monastery was very peaceful with just a handful of other travelers. Exploring Saint Roman Abbey took us about 1.5 hours.

Overall, we really enjoyed our visit. What impressed us most were the unique rock-carved interiors and the breathtaking panoramic views from the top. We think it’s one of the most unusual historical sites in France and highly recommend it to all curious travelers.

Psst. If you’d like to explore more fascinating troglodyte sites, don’t miss Guadix in Spain, famous for its remarkable cave houses!
