Bonjour! Nice Carnival is the most popular winter event on the French Riviera and one of the most renowned carnivals in the world. It takes place each year, from around mid-February for around 2 weeks. During that time, thousands of people visit the city to experience the electrifying atmosphere and to see dozens of colorful floats decorated under the season’s theme.
Each year, a different theme is featured on Carnaval de Nice. Over the last few decades, there have already been themes like King of Pop Culture, King of Fools, King of the Mediterranean, King of Gastronomy, or King of Space.
But after years of male-dominated reigns, in 2026 the spirit of the Nice Carnival was found in women’s power. It celebrated femininity with the bold theme ‘Long live the Queen’. Here is our recap of the Nice Carnival Parade of Lights. Let’s have some fun!

Nice Carnival Parade of Lights 2026
Parade of Lights is the main carnival event and a truly spectacular one! The parade takes place outdoors by night, on Place Massena and around the Albert 1er Garden. It includes giant extravagant floats with impressive animated sculptures (12m tall on average), as well as dozens of various performers. The Nice Carnival Parade of Lights lasts about 90 minutes.
During the 2026 Parade of Lights, we admired the Queen at the beginning (unusual, but understandable given the carnival theme), the King in second position, and their children in third place. After the royal family go their loyal subjects (giant heads, street performers, musical groups, etc), all following the theme of the year with humor and imagination.
If you choose to take part in the closing parade, you’ll also witness fireworks and… the burning of the King. It symbolizes the end of winter and the arrival of spring.
In 2026, we took part in this parade, but due to the fact that the burning unexpectedly took place on the beach and not on Massena Square, we decided to skip it. Seeing all the crowds rushing from the tribunes even before the official parade ended wasn’t encouraging. And also we didn’t want to be late for our return train.

Our opinion about 2026 Nice Carnival
We took part in the Nice Carnival in February 2026, for the second time, this time during the closing Parade of Lights. After remembering the awesome Carnaval de Nice in 2024 we were very excited to experience it again. So we went with quite a huge expectation and… we had fun! But unfortunately not as much as during the first time.
Why you may ask? We felt like something was missing, that women’s power and their importance wasn’t shown properly. Of course there were floats honoring important women in areas like science, culture, history, art, or politics, but the feeling that they weren’t honored properly stayed. Floats we liked most were from the animal kingdom. And while they were truly awesome, we’re not so sure if they were a good representation of the theme (and yes, we understand the general idea behind them).
We also thought that the music wasn’t well chosen – there was nothing really catchy to move the crowds. Oh, and the spacing between the floats was too big this time for our liking. It only added unnecessary wait time for something exciting to show up next.
But still, the Nice Carnival is a truly one-of-a-kind event that we think everyone should experience at least once in a lifetime. Even though this edition didn’t really fit into our expectations, we’ll gladly come back in the future. This edition just had a really strong predecessor and we’re just comparing everything.
Our advice for you? Looks like Parade of Lights is much more fun than its daytime counterpart, so we’d recommend choosing this one if you can. Also, remember to book your tickets about 2 months in advance (best during the ticket opening day) as they sell out fast.
This time we chose our seats in Max Gallo stands on Place Massena, and we must admit we preferred the ones we had on the first time, in Jean Jaures stand (just opposite). For us, it was just more fun to see the floats arriving at the square from around the corner.
