It sits on the Mediterranean coast with dramatic cliffs on both sides and is just a short drive from popular destinations like Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Toulon, and the famous Calanques National Park.

Is Cassis worth visiting?

Of course, Cassis is 100% worth visiting! Despite its small size, there are plenty of things to do in Cassis, and every type of traveler can find something to enjoy. The town offers a beautiful mix of stunning natural scenery, charming old town streets, a picturesque harbor, excellent local wines, and a relaxed Mediterranean small-town atmosphere that makes it easy to slow down and enjoy the moment.

What is Cassis known for?

Cassis is best known for its spectacular natural scenery. The town’s biggest highlight is the Calanques National Park, famous for its dramatic white limestone cliffs and turquoise coves that can be explored by boat, kayak, or on foot. Cassis is also loved for its colorful harbor, charming old town, scenic coastal hiking trails, and for being one of the oldest wine-producing regions in France, renowned for its excellent white and rose wines.

One day is enough to see most of the main highlights of Cassis, including exploring the port and the old town, as well as hiking or taking a boat tour to the Calanques. Cassis Port

Cassis Port is the lively heart of the town and has played an important role since ancient times, when Cassis served as a trading port along the Mediterranean. Here, you’ll find colorful fishing boats sharing the water with elegant yachts, all surrounded by pastel-hued buildings, waterfront cafes and restaurants. From the port, you’ll also enjoy nice views of Château de Cassis located high on the cliff above – now a hotel, but still adding to the town’s postcard-perfect scenery.

Port de Cassis is perfect for a leisurely stroll, watching fishermen sell their catch in the morning, or simply relaxing at a café terrace with a cup of coffee or a glass of local wine while watching the world go by. It’s also the departure point for boat tours to the Calanques. Without a doubt, spending time around the port is one of the best things to do in Cassis.

Cassis Tourist Office is located on Quai des Moulins, a promenade surrounding the port. It’s a great place to grab a map and get useful sightseeing information.

Travel tip. For an amazing view over the port, we recommend heading to the lighthouse.

Château de Cassis

Located on a rocky outcrop overlooking the port and the bay, Château de Cassis is one of the town’s most iconic landmarks and can be spotted from many places around the town. Originally built in the 13th century, the castle has watched over the town for centuries. Unfortunately, it isn’t available for visiting as today it’s a privately owned luxury hotel. If you can afford to stay there, it will be an unforgettable experience in Cassis.

Cassis Old Town

Just above the port, Cassis Old Town invites you to wander through its streets lined with pastel façades and colorful shuttered windows. Here, you’ll find a few cozy cafés, art galleries, inviting restaurants and small shops selling regional specialties. While the old town is tiny, exploring it is still one of the best things to do in Cassis, offering a glimpse of local life. Also, it’s surprisingly quiet compared to the bustling port, offering a peaceful escape just steps away from the waterfront action.

Travel tip. If you’re visiting Cassis on Wednesday or Friday, don’t miss the weekly market filling the streets of Cassis old town. There, you’ll find everything from fresh fruits and local produce to handmade crafts and lavender products.

Cassis beaches

Although less famous than the iconic French Riviera beaches, Cassis still offers several beautiful spots for sunbathing and swimming. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear water, the town’s beaches are perfect for cooling off on warm days or enjoying a picnic in a scenic setting at any time of the year. Whichever beach you choose, spending time by the sea is definitely one of the best things to do in Cassis.

Cassis’ main beach is Plage de la Grande Mer, located right in the heart of town, just steps from the port. It’s a family-friendly sandy beach with lifeguards on duty during the summer months and plenty of cafés, restaurants, and facilities nearby.

Other popular beaches include Plage du Bestouan and Plage de l’Arène. These beaches are mostly pebbly rather than sandy, but they boast incredibly clear water, making them ideal for swimming, snorkeling, or simply floating while admiring the surrounding cliffs and coastal scenery.

But some of the most spectacular beaches are located within the Calanques National Park. Look for small beaches in Port Miou and Calanque de Port-Pin, as well as the stunning pebble beach at Calanque d’En-Vau, surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. Reaching these beaches requires a hike or a boat trip, but the dramatic setting and feeling of seclusion make the effort well worth it.

Cassis Calanques

Visiting the calanques is one of the most popular things to do in Cassis. Stretching along the Mediterranean coast between Marseille and Cassis, the Calanques National Park is known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise waters, and some of the most pristine Mediterranean coastline. Near Cassis, the three most popular calanques are Port-Miou, Port-Pin, and En-Vau.

To reach Port-Miou (a long curved harbor lined with boats) it’s an easy 25-minute walk from the Cassis Port. Just follow the signs, and soon you’ll reach your destination. From there, it’s another 20 minutes to Calanque de Port-Pin, a small and scenic cove perfect for a swim or a short break. Reaching Calanque d’En-Vau takes an additional 40 minutes and involves a steeper, rockier trail, but the effort is well worth it. In total, you’ll need around 5 hours to visit all three calanques and return to Cassis at a relaxed pace.

Best Things to do in Cassis France - Explore Calanques

If hiking isn’t your thing, you can also explore the calanques by boat or kayak. From Cassis Port, several operators offer boat tours ranging from visits to 3 calanques up to 9. These tours typically last between 45 minutes and 2 hours. Kayaking is another fantastic option, allowing you to paddle into the coves, get closer to the cliffs, and access small beaches that are otherwise difficult to reach.

No matter how you choose to explore – on foot, by boat, or by kayak – the raw beauty of the Calanques is unforgettable. A visit here is an absolute must when in Cassis.

Travel tip. Before heading out, keep in mind that you’ll need a few hours, plenty of water, proper footwear, and protection suited to the weather conditions to explore calanques. Also, try to start early in the day to avoid the midday heat. From 1st June to 30th September access to the Parc des Calanques is regulated.

Route des Crêtes

One of the most unforgettable things to do in Cassis is to drive along the 15-kilometre-long Route des Crètes. Connecting Cassis with La Ciotat, this road is one of the most beautiful in southern France! It will take you high above the coastline with spectacular viewpoints along the way. In our opinion, it’s even more breathtaking than the Calanques!

Along Route des Crêtes, you’ll also discover Cap Canaille, Europe’s highest sea cliff, rising to 394 metres. From the top, the panoramic views are absolutely stunning — the entire Bay of Cassis, the Calanques, and the sparkling Mediterranean stretch as far as the eye can see. There are several parking areas along the route where you can stop, take photos, and just admire the incredible panoramas. This drive is not to be missed!

Our opinion about Cassis

For us, a visit to Cassis was a day trip from nearby Bandol where we lived for a few weeks. We visited in mid-October, and during that time the town was full of other tourists. Exploring everything we wanted to see at a relaxed pace took us around 6 hours.

What impressed us most was the area’s stunning natural beauty. We really enjoyed hiking to the Calanques, although we only made it to the first two – it was a hot day, and we hadn’t brought enough water. But as we mentioned earlier, it was the Route des Crêtes that truly stole our hearts. The views along the road are absolutely magnificent. We also loved strolling around the colorful port and wandering through the quieter backstreets of the old town. All in all, Cassis is definitely one of our favorite discoveries in the south of France!
