Bandol, France FAQ
Bandol is located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in the Var department in Southeastern France. Thanks to its great position along the Mediterranean coast, it makes a great base for exploring the western part of the French Riviera, for example, towns like Marseille, La Ciotat, Cassis, Aix-en-Provence, Sanary-sur-Mer, or Toulon.
Bandol is the perfect peaceful escape from the busier hotspots of the Cote d’Azur. But beyond its relaxed vibes and a great chance of slowing down, it offers great beaches, scenic seaside walks, picturesque harbor, and a chance to try some of the finest rosé wines in France.
Bandol is known for being a key appellation of the Provence wine region and its high-quality rosé and red wines. Beyond wine, Bandol is loved for its beaches, picturesque harbor lined with fishing boats and yachts, and a nice blend of Mediterranean scenery and Provençal charm.
One day is enough to explore all the main highlights of Bandol. But to fully appreciate the town’s charm, explore local vineyards, and soak in the slow-paced lifestyle, we recommend staying at least 3 days. Bandol is also a great place for relaxed beach holidays in the South of France.

What to do in Bandol, France
Port & Seaside promenade
One of the most enjoyable things to do in Bandol is exploring its picturesque port lined with palm trees and colorful buildings. It’s one of the biggest ports in France and can accommodate around 1700 boats ranging from small fishing vessels to impressive yachts. And don’t forget to admire traditional, colorful fishing boats known as “pointus” which are part of the area’s maritime heritage.
Be sure to take a nice stroll around Quai Charles de Gaulle promenade, following it all the way to the small lighthouse at the end of the pier. The promenade is lined with pastel-painted houses, cafes, restaurants, and small shops, creating a vibrant Mediterranean atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to sit on a terrace, enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of local rosé, and watch the world go by. And if you love sunsets, Bandol port offers some of the most beautiful views in town!

If you’re in Bandol on a Tuesday morning (8am-1pm), don’t miss the large weekly market held right by the port. There you’ll find local producers and artisans selling everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to seafood, cheeses, olives, and traditional Provençal specialties. In the summer months, the same spot transforms into a nocturnal market (from 7 pm), where you can browse original works from local artists.
Bandol Tourist Office is also located along the port – you’ll find it on Allées Alfred Vivien, just a few steps from the western end of Quai Charles de Gaulle promenade.

Bandol old town streets
Just above the port, Bandol’s old town invites you to wander through its streets lined with pastel façades and colorful shuttered windows. Here, you’ll come across a few cafés, restaurants and small shops selling regional specialties. While the old town might be tiny, exploring it is still one of the best things to do in Bandol, offering a glimpse of authentic local life. Simply wander without a map and in just a few minutes you’ll discover every corner.
While there, don’t miss Bandol’s main square – Place de la Liberté, with 18th-century Saint-François de Sales Church. It might not be the most beautiful church you’ll see, but its simplicity and peaceful atmosphere offer a nice contrast to the bustling harbor area.
On the square below the church, you’ll also find a daily market, held every morning from 9am to 1pm. Fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, cheeses, and many more local products will be waiting for you there.

Bendor Island
One of the most unique things to do in Bandol is visiting Bendor Island (fr. Ile de Bendor), a small island located just 300 meters off the coast. It was bought in 1950 by Paul Ricard, creator of the famous pastis liqueur of the same name, and transformed into a small paradise with elegant buildings, boutique hotels, walking paths, small museums, beaches, and restaurants. You can reach Bendor Island via a short ferry ride from Bandol port.
To learn more about the island and its attractions, visit bandoltourisme.fr website.
If you want to take a good look at it from afar, we recommend heading to Bandol pier (the area near Parking Deferrar) or even higher parts of town (like Avenue de l’Île Rousse in Les Katikias neighborhood) to admire it from above.

Bandol beaches
Without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Bandol is to spend some time on its beautiful beaches. In town you’ll find several beautiful stretches of coastline, each with its own unique character and charm.
Plage de Renecros is the biggest and most beautiful beach in Bandol, located in a sheltered cove just west of the port. With its fine sand, clear turquoise waters, and stunning views, it’s perfect for swimming and relaxing. You’ll also find convenient amenities nearby, including toilets and restaurants.
For a more secluded and private experience, head to Plage du Capelan. It’s a small, pebbly cove located along the coastal path. Thanks to its rocky seabed and lack of sand, the waters here are incredibly clear making it a fantastic place for snorkeling.
Other Bandol beaches worth exploring include Plage du Casino, Plage Centrale, Plage du Grand Vallat, and Plage Eden Roc. If you’re travelling with a dog, you’ll be happy to know there’s also a dedicated Dog Beach near the port, offering great views of Bendor Island.

Bandol Coastal Path
If you like being active, there’s another amazing thing to do in Bandol for you – walking the Coastal Path (fr. Sentier du Littoral). It starts from the port, extends to the east for approximately 7.5 kilometres (one way), and alternates between easy, flat sections and more challenging, rocky passages (so be sure to wear sturdy shoes).
Along the way, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, secluded coves, and the rugged coastline. It’s an incredible way to explore the area.

Grand Casino
If you enjoy a bit of gaming, or simply want to test your luck, head to the Grand Casino. It’s located near the waterfront at the end of the Charles de Gaulle quay. Inside you’ll find a mix of slot machines and classic table games where you’ll have a chance to see if it’s your lucky day.

Bandol wine region
The Bandol wine appellation is one of the oldest and most prestigious in Provence, officially recognized as an AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) since 1941. What makes Bandol wines special is their reliance on the Mourvèdre grape variety, which thrives in the area’s warm coastal climate and limestone soils.
By appellation rules, Bandol reds must contain at least 50% Mourvèdre, resulting in powerful, structured wines with impressive aging potential. The region also produces excellent rosés (about 65% of total production) and a small quantity of whites.
If you enjoy wine, we recommend visiting one of the local wineries for a tasting (remember to book in advance) like Domaine Lou Capelan, Domaine Tempier, or Domaine de Frégate. It’ll definitely be one of the most unforgettable things to do in Bandol.
You can also stop by Maison des Vins de Bandol where you can taste wines from across the region, learn more about the AOC’s history, and get expert advice on bottles to take home – a perfect shortcut through the area’s specialties!
But even if you’re not a wine enthusiast, the beautiful vineyards set against the Mediterranean backdrop make for a scenic excursion too!

Our opinion about Bandol
We lived in Bandol for a few weeks (October-November) during our digital nomad #season3. During this time, the town was peaceful with just a few visitors and plenty of locals going on with their daily lives. While we explored Bandol in parts over several days we’re sure that a few hours would be enough to explore it thoroughly if you’re short on time.
Overall, Bandol didn’t really steal our hearts but we liked it enough to consider coming back in the future. We especially appreciated the sunny, warm autumn. But we also remembered it as a quite windy spot! The town itself is charming, relaxed, and perfect for unwinding without the crowds. We really enjoyed strolling around and discovering its secrets.

One of our absolute favorite things to do in Bandol was watching the sunsets – some of the coolest we’ve ever seen, and almost every evening! For that, we especially recommend booking accommodation in the upper parts of town (such as Les Katikias) with a view over the port.
Oh, and we also found Bandol a great starting point for exploring the western part of the French Riviera with plenty of beautiful towns and coastal spots just a short drive away.
