About the Pont de Gau Ornithological Park
The park started life back in 1949 as a modest little zoological park run by a Camargue nature enthusiast. Over the decades, and through three generations of the same family, it has grown into what it is today: a nature reserve spanning 60 hectares, with several kilometers of walking trails and home to more than 200 recorded bird species.
What makes the Ornithological Park of Pont de Gau different from a typical bird park is that many of the birds aren’t kept behind fences. Ponds, reed beds, salt marshes, and grassy areas form a natural landscape where wild birds choose to live. This means you’re not simply looking at birds on display but observing real Camargue wildlife going about its day.

There’s also a smaller section with large aviaries, home to species that are much harder to spot in the wild, like white storks, black kites, and purple herons, each kept in a habitat designed to mimic their natural one.
The Ornithological Park of Pont de Gau is an ideal place to discover, observe, and photograph a wide variety of bird species in their natural surroundings. As you follow the park’s walking trails, you’ll be surrounded by the unique biodiversity of the Camargue, with birdsong often the only sound breaking the silence.

Visiting Ornithological Park of Pont de Gau
Walk the Pont de Gau trails
The main draw to the Pont de Gau is simply walking and admiring. The park’s trails wind along the edge of the Étang de Ginès and through reed beds, salt flats, and grassy paths, with viewpoints and observation posts set up right where the birds like to gather. Thanks to how close the paths bring you to the water, you don’t need a telephoto lens to feel like you’re really in among the birds!
Oh, and picnicking is allowed inside the park, and honestly, eating lunch with flamingos as your backdrop is a pretty great way to spend an hour or two! We vouch for that!

Spot the flamingos & wild birds
Let’s be honest, the flamingos are the main event for most visitors. Hundreds of them gather on the park’s shallow lakes, feeding, preening, and occasionally breaking into their strange, synchronized courtship walk if you happen to visit in winter.
Don’t worry if you’re visiting outside that window though, flamingos are present in the Camargue all year round, just in smaller numbers during the warmer months.
Also, don’t miss the aviaries. This park section covers about a hectare and recreates the habitats of species that are trickier to see out, including herons, kingfishers, and birds of prey. It’s a nice complement to the wilder parts of the park, especially if you want a guaranteed close-up look at species that might otherwise stay hidden in the reeds.

Our opinion about Pont de Gau
For us, a visit to Pont de Gau was a half-day trip from nearby La Grande Motte where we lived for a few weeks. We visited in late April, and during that time the park was pleasantly quiet, without too many other visitors. We spent around 5 hours there walking, photographing birds, admiring the scenery, and simply enjoying the peaceful moments. And, of course, eating dinner while surrounded by cute flamingos!
What can we say after visiting Pont de Gau? The park is a wonderful place to slow down, enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the Camargue, and get closer to its fascinating birdlife. We also loved how natural and unstaged everything felt. We were lucky to see a huge variety of birds and large flocks of flamingos during our visit. It’s an experience we still remember very fondly!
