How much time do you need for the Andalusia road trip?
We think 10 to 14 days will be ideal for an Andalusia road trip – it will give you enough time to discover the region’s major highlights. You’ll get a chance to explore vibrant cities, charming white villages, natural wonders, and even enjoy some relaxing time along the coast.
But during that time, you’ll experience only the essence of Andalusia – there’s so much more to explore! So, for a proper tour around, without rushing, we recommend spending at least 3 weeks in Andalusia. The more time you have, the better! Ultimately, how long you’ll need depends on how many places you want to explore.
What’s the best time for an Andalusia road trip?
In Andalusia you’ll experience a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. In our opinion, the best time to visit is spring or early autumn – the weather is warm and sunny, there are fewer crowds, and the prices are a bit lower.
Summer months can be extremely hot with temperatures often reaching 40°C, and with a lot of people around. If you prefer a quieter visit and lower temperatures around 15-20°C (but still a lot of sun), you’ll be happy to visit during winter.
How to move around Andalusia?
The best way to explore Andalusia on a road trip? Definitely by car! But if you’re up for a bit more adventure, a motorcycle is a fantastic option too!
Whether you’re driving your own or a rental one, having a set of wheels gives you the freedom to discover hidden villages, scenic routes, and off-the-beaten-path spots that public transport just doesn’t reach. You can easily rent a car at airports and in all major Andalusian cities.

Andalusia is also well-connected by public transport. Between big cities, you can move quickly using trains or buses. But public transport usually doesn’t reach smaller or more remote places, or the access is complicated. For a true road trip experience, we definitely recommend going on your own wheels!
Andalusia road trip: Top destinations
Malaga
Malaga is a place where rich history, a vibrant culinary scene, good weather, world-class museums, sandy beaches, and a lively atmosphere come together perfectly. It’s best known for being the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and home to some of his works, holiday-perfect beaches, one of the largest Arab fortresses in Andalusia, striking views over the surroundings, and a food scene full of fresh seafood and tapas. Malaga will definitely be one of the most interesting stops during your Andalusia road trip!
Benalmadena Pueblo
Benalmadena Pueblo is one of our favourite white villages in Andalusia, which has retained its authenticity to this day. It’s full of narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed houses generously decorated with colorful flowers. However, Benalmadena Pueblo is most famous for Colomares Castle, a building that looks like a fairy-tale castle, but in reality, it’s… a monument dedicated to C. Columbus and his discovery of America, built by only 3 people!
Cordoba
Cordoba is one of the most extraordinary cities in Southern Spain, which quickly stole our hearts. Once it was the capital of Islamic Spain, and now it is a place where history, culture, and stunning architecture blend perfectly. In Cordoba, you’ll explore the picturesque old town, admire one of the most remarkable landmarks in the country (which alone makes it worth the trip), taste local specialties, and visit flower-filled patios. Cordoba is sure to be one of the highlights of your Andalusia road trip!
Almeria
Almeria offers a wonderful mix of a big city with many attractions, combined with a chilled vibe pulled straight from smaller Spanish towns. It’s a peaceful destination, without many tourists, where you can enjoy its charms in peace. Almeria is best known for the impressive Alcazaba, a unique-looking cathedral, a charming old town, and tranquil beaches. With over 3000 hours of sunshine per year and very little rain, Almeria is a real paradise for those looking for sun, regardless of the time of the year!
Caminito del Rey
Caminito del Rey is one of the most thrilling hikes in Andalusia. It traces a narrow walkway pinned along the steep walls of a dramatic gorge. Once known as the “world’s most dangerous path”, it’s now fully restored and totally safe. Yet still delivers some adrenaline and spectacular views! This 7.7 km one-way trail winds through cliffs, canyons, and a hanging footbridge over the Guadalhorce River. If you’re up for an adventure, Caminito del Rey absolutely deserves a spot on your Andalusia road trip itinerary.
Cadiz
Cadiz is another amazing place you don’t want to miss during your Andalusia road trip. It’s one of the oldest and most continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe – it’s more than 3000 years old! Cadiz is located on a narrow slice of land, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Today, the city charms visitors with its relaxed coastal vibe, golden beaches, and interesting history. Frigiliana
Frigiliana is a charming little Andalusian white village that will be a postcard-perfect stop during the Andalusia road trip. It’s one of the best-preserved villages in the Province of Malaga and officially named one of the most beautiful ones in the region! Frigiliana is located at an altitude of 320 m a.s.l, squeezed between the Mediterranean Sea and Parque Natural de Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama. While wandering through Frigiliana’s narrow cobbled streets, passing white houses adorned with flowers and colorfully painted doors, you can feel as if you have stepped back in time.
Ronda
Ronda is one of the most picturesque cities in Southern Spain, dramatically perched on the edge of a deep gorge that splits the town in two. The iconic Puente Nuevo bridge offers stunning views over the El Tajo canyon and connects the historic and new parts of the town. Beyond the scenery, Ronda will charm you with its charming streets, Moorish architecture, and one of the oldest bullrings in Spain (after all, it’s a place considered the birthplace of bullfighting!).

Tarifa
Tarifa is the southernmost point of Spain and mainland Europe. It lies right across Morocco, in a place where the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea meet. Thanks to strong, constant winds Tarifa is called Europe’s capital of the wind, and hence is one of the world’s most popular destinations for water sports, like kitesurfing or windsurfing, where thousands of water sports enthusiasts come every year.
