The hike takes about 20 minutes at a comfortable pace. Don’t worry though – benches and tables are placed along the path so you can rest whenever you’d need to.
The path itself is quite steep and can be uneven in places, so wearing proper footwear is a must. It’s manageable for families with children, but probably not a good idea with a stroller. Unfortunately, the Fortress of Mornas is also not accessible for people with reduced mobility, which is something to keep in mind. Also, don’t forget to take a bottle of water!

The fortress is open from April to November, usually from 9:45 AM to 5:30 PM, with a short midday break between 12:00 PM and 12:30 PM.

Where to park in Fortress of Mornas?
Parking lots are located exclusively at the bottom of the Mornas village, and from there you need to walk up to the fortress on foot. You can park on Parking de la Forteresse or along the N7 road.
To Fortress of Mornas by public transport
Public transport to Mornas is limited and the trip might be long, even from the nearby towns. There is no train station in the village so the fastest way of getting directly to the village is by bus.
Overall, your best option will be to take a train or bus to Orange and from there take a bus or taxi for the remaining 10km. The bus trip from Orange will take about 15 minutes (€4–6), and 10 minutes by taxi (€30–40). Our opinion about the Fortress of Mornas
For us, a visit to Fortress of Mornas was a day trip from Orgon where we lived for a few weeks. We combined it with a visit to the nearby Orange. We visited in late May, and during that time both the fortress and the village were peaceful and far away from tourist crowds. Exploring Fortress of Mornas and the village took us about 2.5 hours.
Overall, we really enjoyed our visit to Mornas. What impressed us most was definitely the fortress. The climb up was indeed quite exhausting, but the views just kept getting better and better. Once at the top, we loved wandering along the ramparts and soaking in the panoramic views over surroundings. Thankfully, the effort felt worthwhile!
The small Mornas village below was pleasant to explore too. In our opinion, Fortress of Mornas is one of the best stops you can make while driving through Provence – especially if you’re in the area near Avignon.
