Saignon is located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in southeastern France, within the Vaucluse department. It’s close to popular Provencal villages like Roussillon, Gordes, or Bonnieux, and is only about an 1 hour drive from larger cities like Avignon and Aix en Provence.
Without a doubt! In our opinion, Saignon is one of the loveliest and most underrated villages in the Luberon. Although it’s much smaller and less famous than nearby Gordes or Roussillon, Saignon offers everything visitors love about Provence: beautiful stone streets, panoramic viewpoints, a relaxed atmosphere, and very few crowds. So if you are looking for a quiet day during your Provence adventure, this is a wonderful place to visit.
Saignon is best known for its dramatic rock, Rocher de Bellevue, which rises above the village and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. It’s also known for its Romanesque church, its historic role as a medieval lookout point guarding the region, and the unusual fact that three separate castles once stood within the village.
Saignon is a small village and doesn’t take long to explore – two or three hours are enough to see all its highlights at a relaxed pace. Afterward, you can continue your trip to other nearby villages like Gordes, Roussillon, Lacoste, or Bonnieux.

There’s no better way to discover Saignon than by slowly wandering through its beautiful streets and letting the village work its magic on you. Take your time to explore quiet lanes lined with stone houses adorned with colorful shutters. Discover beautiful fountains, hidden passages, cozy squares, and stop at scenic viewpoints overlooking the Luberon countryside.
In Saignon, you’ll find several interesting landmarks, including Place de la Fontaine with a stunning 16th-century fountain, ancient washhouse, the 16th-century Clock Tower, the simple and peaceful Romanesque Church of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, and Porte du Vent – a historic medieval gate. Beyond its main landmarks, Saignon is also home to some small art galleries and cozy cafés with sunny terraces, perfect for a relaxing break.

Climb Rocher de Bellevue
One of the most exciting things to do in Saignon is to climb its famous Rocher de Bellevue. The path to the top is short but a little steep and uneven in places, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring some water, especially if you’re visiting in summer. Don’t worry, though – it’s a quick climb and absolutely worth the effort!
From the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views over the Luberon Valley, with vineyards, lavender fields, and rolling hills stretching out below. Up here you’ll also find the remains of the old castle that once guarded the village. It’s the perfect spot to catch your breath, admire the scenery, and understand why Saignon was chosen as a strategic lookout.

Admire views over Saignon & enjoy lavender fields
For one of the most beautiful views of Saignon, head to the countryside below the village. From here, you can admire Saignon perched dramatically on the hillside, with the surrounding Provence landscape stretching out behind it.
In summer, the scene becomes even more picturesque when the nearby lavender fields burst into bloom, creating a beautiful purple foreground against the historic village. Explore Saignon surroundings
One of the best things about Saignon is where it is. It also makes a fantastic, peaceful base for exploring the rest of the Luberon by car! Within easy reach you’ll find famous villages like Gordes, Roussillon and its red ochre cliffs, Bonnieux, Menerbes, Lacoste, Goult, and Lourmarin, all within a short drive.
Also, only 20 kilometres away you’ll find Colorado Provençal. It’s a place you can’t miss if the Ochre Trail in Roussillon left you wanting more of these spectacular landscapes! Big cities like Avignon or Aix-en-Provence are only about an hour drive away.
So sleep somewhere quiet, then spend your days village-hopping across one of the most beautiful corners of France!
How to get to Saignon, France?
Saignon is located about 15km from Roussillon or Saint Saturnin les Apt, 20km from Bonnieux or Lacoste, 25km from Gordes, and 55km from Avignon or Aix-en-Provence. The most convenient way to get to Saignon is by car.
Where to park in Saignon?
In Saignon we recommend leaving a car in this free Saignon Carpark located right at the entrance to the village. Just leave the car here and continue on foot.
To Saignon by public transport
Public transport to Saignon is limited and the trip might be long, even from the nearby villages and towns. The fastest, and actually the only, way of getting directly to the village is by bus. You won’t have too much trouble with it from nearby places like Gordes, Bonnieux, Apt, or Avignon. Our opinion about Saignon
For us, a visit to Saignon was a day trip from nearby Orgon, where we lived for a few weeks. We combined it with a visit to the nearby Sault and Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt. We visited the village in early June, and during that time it was extremely peaceful with only a handful of other visitors around. It felt like we had Saignon to ourselves! Exploring everything we wanted took us about 2 hours.
Saignon isn’t a place packed with things to do, and that’s precisely why it won us over. We spent happy hours getting lost in its streets, climbing up to the rock for those incredible views, and just sitting on a square listening to the fountain while eating lunch.
We really enjoyed Saignon and instantly fell in love with its unspoiled, authentic, and incredibly calm atmosphere. In our opinion, it’s one of Luberon’s standout destinations and a place that shouldn’t be missing from your Provence itinerary.
