Visit Simiane la Rotonde Castle
This is the unquestionable star of the village. Castle of Simiane-la-Rotonde is one of the most remarkable medieval castles in Provence, with the site first mentioned as early as the 12th century. Its most famous feature is the Rotonde, a unique circular keep and the main reason many visitors come here.
From the outside, the Rotonde looks like a massive stone cone rising above the village. Step inside and you’ll find an impressive circular hall crowned by a stone cupola with twelve ribbed vaults, rising around 5 meters above the floor and topped with a small oculus.
The restored wing of the castle is also open to visitors. On the ground floor, the medieval rooms tell the story of the castle’s long history, while the Renaissance rooms upstairs house the Sainte-Victoire Aromatherapy Laboratory and temporary art exhibitions. Don’t miss the terrace, where you can enjoy beautiful views over the village rooftops, surrounding countryside, and the lavender fields stretching below.
Entrance to Simiane la Rotonde Castle costs €5.5 for a normal ticket, €4.5 for a reduced one, and is free for children under 12 years old (July 2026). For current prices and opening hours, visit the simiane-la-rotonde.fr website.

Admire the lavender fields
From late June to late-July, the plateau around Simiane transforms into a sea of purple lavender fields. The village is perfectly positioned to enjoy this spectacular scenery – you can admire lavender views from the castle, and it’s only a short drive to reach the fields themselves too!
Also note that, thanks to its higher altitude, lavender around Simiane-la-Rotonde often blooms slightly later than the famous fields of Valensole.
Travel tip. From the fields below the village you can also enjoy beautiful views back towards Simiane-la-Rotonde, with the medieval village rising above the purple landscape.
