Pont Julien
Just a few kilometers from Bonnieux historic centre, down in the plain below, you’ll find Pont Julien – an ancient Roman stone arch bridge spanning the Calavon River. It dates back to 3 BC and was built during the reign of Roman Emperor Augustus. Pont Julien was originally built on the Via Domitia, one of the most important Roman roads in Western Europe that connected Spain and Italy.
This impressive structure is a true testament to Roman engineering. Remarkably, the 2000-year-old bridge remained open to vehicle traffic until 2005! Now it’s reserved for pedestrians and cyclists only. It’s a great place for a pitstop while cycling, or a relaxing break after exploring Bonnieux village.
Cedar Forest
Cedar Forest (fr. Forêt de Cèdres) is one of the most extraordinary natural sites in Provence. This isn’t just any forest – it’s the largest cedar forest in Europe, covering approximately 250 hectares across the communes of Bonnieux, Lacoste, and Menerbes! It’s located about 8 kilometres from Bonnieux village centre, at an altitude of about 720 m a.s.l.
It was planted in the 19th century with Atlas cedars, and today offers several walking paths, gentle hiking trails, and scenic viewpoints overlooking the surrounding countryside. It’s the perfect place to unwind and experience a different side of Bonnieux beyond its medieval streets.

Our opinion about Bonnieux
For us, a visit to Bonnieux village was a day trip from nearby Orgon, where we lived for a few weeks. We combined it with a visit to the nearby Lacoste. We visited Bonnieux in mid-May, and during that time the village was peaceful with only a handful of other visitors around. Exploring everything we wanted, including Cedar Forest and Pont Julien, took us about 6 hours.
We really enjoyed Bonnieux – it actually exceeded our expectations! We loved how authentic and calm it felt, and wandering the cobblestone streets while admiring wonderful views was a pure pleasure. Bonnieux village isn’t about rushing from one attraction to another – it’s all about slowing down and enjoying the moment.
We also really enjoyed our 2-hour hike in the Cedar Forest. It’s a beautiful, quiet, and unique spot in Provence, and a great addition to any visit to Bonnieux.
