Ansouis is pretty, peaceful, well-preserved, and yet still undiscovered by many tourists compared to its more famous neighbours. You won’t find dozens of exciting things to do here, but that’s exactly the point – it’s the perfect quiet escape into Provençal life.
Ansouis is best known for its hilltop setting, beautiful 10th-century castle crowning the village, picturesque stone streets, and traditional Provençal charm. It’s also recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France.
Half a day is enough to explore Ansouis thoroughly. The village is small and most things to do can be done in just a few hours. Afterward, you can visit nearby villages like Cucuron, Lourmarin, Lacoste, or Roussillon. But if you want to experience Ansouis charm even more, staying overnight will be a great idea!

Ansouis historic streets
Ansouis is a typical medieval village spiraling around the top of a hill, and the best way to discover its charm is simply by wandering its narrow cobbled streets. As you stroll uphill toward the castle, you’ll pass quaint stone houses with decorative doorways, ancient fountains, narrow passageways, and quiet little squares.
Don’t expect a lot of shops, restaurants, busy streets, or a long list of attractions here – Ansouis is small, sleepy, and authentic. You’ll find a bakery, a small grocery store, a couple of cafés, art galleries, and a few craftsmen’s workshops, but that’s about it. And honestly? That’s the beauty of Ansouis village. Simply wandering around the streets is one of the best things to do in Ansouis and it allows you to soak up the relaxed atmosphere.
Among Ansouis village streets, you’ll find points of interest like: hilltop castle and Saint-Martin Church, Place des Hôtes, Musée Extraordinaire, Place Saint Elzéar, the Belfry, as well as some medieval gates and remnants of old fortifications. Wherever you turn, you’ll find a postcard-worthy detail – just take your time and let yourself get lost.
The Ansouis Tourist Office is located on the castle grounds. It’s a great place to pick up maps and get helpful sightseeing tips.
Travel tip. If you’re visiting Ansouis on a Sunday, don’t miss the weekly market. It takes place around the Route de Cucuron, from 8am to around 1pm. Everything from fresh fruits and lavender products to handmade crafts and souvenirs await there.
Ansouis Castle
The Château d’Ansouis is the star of the village. Originally built as a defensive fortress in the 10th century on a rocky hill, it was gradually transformed over the centuries into the elegant Renaissance residence you can admire today. The castle is privately owned and still inhabited – which makes the visit feel even more unique and special.
Inside, you’ll discover beautifully decorated rooms featuring elaborate plasterwork, period furniture, family portraits, tapestries, an armoury, a magnificent staircase, and even a private chapel. The castle’s terraces and hanging gardens also offer breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside, vineyards, and olive groves. Visiting the castle is without a doubt one of the most unforgettable things to do in Ansouis.
Ansouis Castle can only be visited on a guided tour available from April to November. Booking in advance is necessary. Saint-Martin Church
Right next to the Château d’Ansouis stands Église Saint-Martin, a unique fortified church dating back to the 12th century. What makes it really special is that it has never been enlarged – it’s preserved its original form for over 800 years! The fortified design isn’t a coincidence: the church was built against the protective walls of the village’s medieval homes and originally served as the castle’s courthouse.
Inside, you’ll find 17th-century statues and altarpieces, paintings depicting Saint Elzéar and Saint Delphine, and traces of original decorative paintings on the walls. The church is free to visit during opening hours.
But our favorite thing about the church is its magnificent viewpoint. The panoramic views over the countryside are wonderful and easily rank among the most beautiful views in the village. Stopping here is definitely one of the best things to do in Ansouis, don’t miss it.
Musee Extraordinaire
At the foot of the village, you’ll find one of the quirkiest little museums in Provence – the Musée Extraordinaire located in a restored 16th-century building. This small private museum displays the lifelong passion projects of Georges Mazoyer: shells, corals, fossils, taxidermied marine animals, and minerals collected during 50+ years of scuba diving around the world. On top of that, you’ll see his paintings, ceramics, and stained glass works.
The highlight is undoubtedly the “blue coral cave”, a magical room recreated as an underwater grotto. It’s silly, charming, and unexpected all at once – exactly what makes it “extraordinary”! In our opinion, it’s worth a quick visit if you have an extra hour and want to discover something completely off the beaten path.

How to get to Ansouis, France?
Ansouis is located about 30km from Aix-en-Provence, 35km from Roussillon, 45km from Gordes, 60km from Saint Remy de Provence, and 65km from Avignon. The most convenient way to get to Ansouis is by car.
Where to park in Ansouis?
In Ansouis we can recommend leaving a car in free Parking du Coignet located at the foot of the village. From there, the historic centre is just a short walk away.
To Ansouis by public transport
Unfortunately, public transportation options to Ansouis are limited. With no direct train connections to the village (the closest train stations are in towns like Aix-en-Provence or Cavaillon) your best option is to rent a car for the fastest and most comfortable journey.

Our opinion about Ansouis
For us, a visit to Ansouis was a day trip, combined with a visit to nearby Cucuron and Lourmarin, from Orgon where we lived for a few weeks. We visited in mid-May and during that time the village was very peaceful, with just a handful of other tourists around. Exploring everything we wanted at a relaxed pace took us about 2 hours.
We really enjoyed our time in Ansouis. It felt calm, authentic, and wonderfully picturesque – exactly the kind of Provençal village we love discovering in southern France. Unlike some other popular nearby villages, it has managed to keep its character intact. Strolling through flower-filled streets, admiring breathtaking views, and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere was pure pleasure!
