Venasque is best known for its 6th-century baptistery – one of the oldest religious buildings in France, and its delicious Monts de Venasque cherries. The village is also famous for its well-preserved medieval center and stunning views over the surrounding vineyards, forests, and the distant Mont Ventoux.
Venasque is a tiny village and doesn’t take long to explore and an hour or two is perfectly enough to see all its highlights at a relaxed pace. Afterward, you can continue your trip to nearby villages like L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Gordes, or Roussillon.

Venasque Village Streets
Venasque is largely a one-street village, so getting to know it couldn’t be simpler – just follow the lane and let it lead you. You’ll pass beautiful century-old stone houses, picturesque little squares, historic fountains, a few small shops and art galleries, and the occasional cafe terrace. And don’t be afraid to wander away from the main street – you never know what hidden corners and beautiful views you’ll discover!
There are no big sights pulling you from one to the next – you simply stroll, and the village reveals itself. The most important points of interest in Vanasque include the Baptistery, the Church of Our Lady of Venasca, and Place des Tours with impressive Saracen towers.
The Venasque Tourist Office is located on Grand Rue right next to the church. It’s a convenient stop to pick up a map and gather helpful sightseeing information.
Venasque Baptistery
The Baptistery is one of the oldest religious buildings in France and definitely the star of the village. It dates back to the 6th century and was rebuilt and restored over the following centuries several times.Inside, you’ll find a well-preserved space laid out in the shape of a Greek cross, with four apses opening off the central area. On the floor you can still see the spot where the octagonal baptismal font once stood.
Entrance to the Venasque Baptistery is free during opening hours (9am-6pm). Unfortunately, during our visit it was closed, so we didn’t have a chance to see it.
Church of Our Lady of Venasca
Right next to the baptistery stands the Church of Our Lady of Venasca, a 12th-century Romanesque church. The interior is simple and beautiful, with a few treasures worth slowing down for: a 17th-century altarpiece, a 15th-century procession crucifix, and a painting of the Crucifixion from the Avignon School dating all the way back to 1498. Entrance is free.
Saracen Towers
Semi-circular towers, known as the “Saracen Towers”, guard the entrance to the village. They are part of the 13th-century ramparts, and the tallest one rises about 18m high! Venasque’s hilltop position made it a naturally well-defended place, and the village was famously besieged during the Wars of Religion but never conquered.
Today, the Saracen Towers are considered some of the finest examples of medieval defensive architecture preserved in southern France.

Place des Tours
Just beyond the towers you’ll reach the Place des Tours, a square that offers truly magnificent views over the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, you’ll see the Monts de Vaucluse, the jagged Dentelles de Montmirail, and the mighty Mont Ventoux at over 1,900m. Don’t rush, grab a spot, and take in the scenery.
Venasque Cherries
If there’s one flavour that belongs to Venasque, it’s cherries. The area around the village is surrounded by cherry orchards, and the local “Monts de Venasque” cherries carry a quality label that’s been protected since 1978.
If you visit in spring you’ll catch the beautiful white blossom. Come back from mid-May to mid-July and it’s all about the juicy red fruit. There’s also the Cherry Festival, which takes over the village for a day in June! In the village itself, you’ll find one or two small shops selling cherry products – don’t miss them.
How to get to Venasque, France?
Venasque is located about 15km from Gordes, 20km from L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, 25km from Roussillon, and 40km from Avignon. The most convenient way to get to Venasque is by car.
Where to park in Venasque?
In Venasque we recommend leaving a car in one of the village’s free parking lots – either near the Saracen Towers or the church.
To Venasque by public transport
Public transport to Venasque is quite limited, so visiting without a car requires some planning. The nearest train station is in Carpentras, which is connected to Avignon by regular TER trains. From there, the local bus runs to Venasque village a few times a day, taking about 25 minutes.
If you’re coming from other nearby destinations such as Gordes or Roussillon, transport options can be complicated as well. In many cases, the easiest option is to first reach Carpentras by public transport or taxi, then continue to Venasque.
To Venasque by taxi
The most expensive option, but also the fastest one if you care about time, and available from almost every place. Venasque is a small, quiet, and wonderfully authentic village where the main pleasures are simple ones. Our opinion about Venasque
For us, a visit to Venasque was a day trip from nearby Orgon where we lived for a few weeks. We combined it with a visit to the nearby L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and Fontaine de Vaucluse. We visited in late May, and during that time Venasque was wonderfully peaceful – we practically had the streets to ourselves! Exploring everything we wanted took us about 1.5 hours at a very slow pace.
What we loved most was the peaceful atmosphere of the village. It’s the kind of place where you can admire the views while listening to fountains and birds singing, and stroll through the streets while catching snippets of locals’ conversations. And of course, we truly enjoyed the views over the Provençal countryside while eating our homemade dinner.
We think that Venasque is well worth the short detour, it’s definitely one of our favorite hidden gems in Provence!
