Travel tip. If you’re visiting Roussillon on Thursdays, don’t miss the weekly market held at Place du Pasquier from around 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. There, you’ll find everything from fresh fruits and local produce to handmade crafts and lavender products.
Walk Ochre Trail – Sentier des Ocres
Walking the Ochre Trail, known as the Sentier des Ocres in French, should be at the top of your list of things to do in Roussillon. This scenic walk will take you through former ochre quarries, where you’ll discover an extraordinary landscape of red, orange, and yellow cliffs. Sentier des Ocres trail features unique rock formations, towering pinnacles, deep canyons, and wave-like patterns shaped by nature over millions of years.
There are two route options to choose from: a shorter 30-minute loop and a longer 60-minute circuit. Both trails are well-marked and feature wooden boardwalks and viewing platforms. If you’re short on time, the 30-minute route gives you a great introduction to the ochre landscape. However, if you can spare the extra time, we recommend the full hour-long walk for a more immersive experience.
Practical tip. Avoid wearing white or light-colored shoes and clothing. Ochre dust stains easily and is very difficult to dust off.

If you’d like to dive deeper into the area’s history, and learn how ochre was mined and used throughout the centuries, consider visiting the Ochre Ecomuseum. It’s located about a 20-minute walk from the Sentier des Ocres and is housed in a former ochre factory known as Usine Mathieu.
Legend of Lady Sermonde
While the geological explanation for Roussillon’s colors involves iron oxide deposits and millions of years of natural processes, locals prefer the more romantic (and tragic) legend of Lady Sermonde.
According to the story, Lady Sermonde lived in Roussillon’s castle with her husband, the cruel Lord Raymond d’Avignon. She fell in love with a handsome Provençal troubadour, but when her jealous husband discovered the affair, he killed the young man and served his heart to her at dinner. When Lady Sermonde realized what she had eaten, she threw herself from the top of the ochre cliffs. Legend says that the blood of Lady Sermonde stained the earth red and yellow, giving Roussillon its distinctive colors.

How to get to Roussillon, France?
Roussillon is located about 10km from Bonnieux or Gordes, 25km from L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, 45km from Avignon, and 65km from Aix-en-Provence. The most convenient way to get to Roussillon is by car.
Where to park in Roussillon?
In Roussillon we recommend leaving a car in Parking des Sablons or Parking Ocher. Both are paid and located just a short walk from the historic centre. Also, be aware that they fill up quickly in the high season.
To Roussillon by public transport
Public transport to Roussillon is limited and the trip might be long, even from the nearby villages and towns. The fastest, and actually the only, way of getting directly to the village is by bus. You won’t have too much trouble with it from nearby places like Gordes, Bonnieux, Lourmarin, Aix-en-Provence, or Avignon. Our opinion about Roussillon
For us, a visit to Roussillon was a day trip from nearby Orgon, where we lived for a few weeks. We combined it with a visit to the nearby Gordes. We visited Roussillon in mid-May, and while the village itself was peaceful, the Sentier des Ocres was surprisingly busy. Exploring everything we wanted took us about 3 hours.
What impressed us most was how different Roussillon felt compared to other Provençal villages. We’ve explored dozens of them, yet Roussillon truly stands out thanks to its incredible ochre colors. Walking through streets painted in shades of red and orange felt almost surreal.
Walking the Ochre Trail was a highlight as well. We chose the longer route and didn’t regret it for a second. Although we have to admit that we found the nearby Colorado Provençal even more impressive!
Overall, Roussillon is a standout destination in Provence that we definitely recommend visiting.
