Visit Lourmarin Castle
Lourmarin Castle (fr. Château de Lourmarin) is the crown jewel of the village, located on a small hill overlooking the surrounding rooftops and countryside. It was built during the 15th and 16th centuries on the foundations of a 12th-century fortress and is considered the first Renaissance castle in Provence. After falling into decline it was restored in the 1920s, and exploring it is now one of the best things to do in Lourmarin.
From the outside, you’ll be struck by its elegant architecture and scenic setting. Inside, you’ll find a stunning spiral staircase, beautifully furnished rooms, a collection of fascinating art pieces, and wonderful views over Lourmarin village.
Entrance to Lourmarin Castle costs €8 for a normal ticket, €6.5 for a reduced one, and €3.5 for children 6-12 (August 2026). For currency prices and opening hours visit chateaudelourmarin.com website. You’ll need about 1 hour to explore the castle.
Travel tip. Right across from the castle, you’ll find the beautiful Protestant Temple. If it happens to be open during your visit, be sure to take a peek inside.

For one of the best views of Lourmarin, head to the viewpoint on Avenue Laurent Vibert. The closer you get to the crossroads with Route de Lauris the better views you’ll get.

Visit Albert Camus Grave
Another important stop in Lourmarin, especially for literature lovers, is the grave of the Nobel Prize-winning author Albert Camus. After falling in love with the village he bought a home here in 1958, just after winning the prize. Tragically, he died in a car accident in 1960 and was buried in the Lourmarin cemetery.
His grave is remarkably simple, yet often adorned with flowers and personal notes from admirers. The cemetery is just a short walk from the village center.

In Lourmarin, you’ll find several parking lots along the roads at the foot of the village. Most of them (if not all), are free. We can recommend Parking Philou, located just a short walk from the castle.
To Lourmarin by public transport
Unfortunately, public transportation options to Lourmarin are limited. With no direct train connections to the village (the closest train stations are in towns like Aix-en-Provence or Cavaillon) your best option is to rent a car for the fastest and most comfortable journey.

Our opinion about Lourmarin
For us, a visit to Lourmarin was a day trip, combined with a visit to Ansouis, from nearby Orgon where we lived for a few weeks. We visited in mid-May and during that time the village was peaceful, with just a handful of other tourists around. Exploring everything we wanted at a relaxed pace took us about 2.5 hours.
Lourmarin surprised us with its beauty and authentic Provençal charm. Unlike some other popular villages in Provence, it has managed to keep its character intact.
We really enjoyed wandering through the streets (and meeting its adorable furry residents). Exploring the castle was an amazing experience too – for us it’s one of the best castles in Provence with fascinating rooms and treasures inside.
