As you stroll through the village, you’ll come across quaint stone houses with beautiful wooden doors, pretty fountains, narrow passageways, and quiet little squares. Also, there are no cars in the upper village, which adds to the peaceful atmosphere. Simply strolling through the streets is one of the best things to do in Cucuron, as it allows you to soak up the relaxed Provençal lifestyle.

Bassin de l’Étang
Without a doubt, the Bassin de l’Étang is the star of Cucuron and the first place you should head to. This huge rectangular stone basin, dating back to the 15th century, was originally built to power the village’s mills. In the early 19th century, it was converted into the purely ornamental pool you see today, and it has been the heart of village life ever since.
What makes the basin so special is the row of 200-year-old plane trees that line it, casting wonderful cool shade over the cafés and restaurants on its banks. Even on the hottest days, the water and the trees seem to drop the temperature by a few degrees – perfect for a long, lazy Provençal lunch. The basin is also home to a small army of well-fed koi carp that can’t quite believe their luck. Just so you know – swimming is not allowed!
Fun fact. This is the very basin you may recognize from “A Good Year” – the scene where Russell Crowe sits by the water with Marion Cotillard was filmed right here.

Donjon Saint-Michel
At the highest point of the village stand the remains of the Donjon Saint-Michel, the 14th-century keep of the medieval castle around which Cucuron developed. The castle was abandoned in the 17th century and most of it has crumbled away, but climbing up to the donjon is absolutely worth it and one of the best things to do in Cucuron.
From there, you’ll get one of the most beautiful views in the entire Luberon – village rooftops in red tile, vineyards and olive groves rolling away below, and on a clear day, panoramic views all the way to Mont Sainte-Victoire, the Alpilles, and the Alpes de Haute-Provence.
Cucuron’s medieval defenses
Together with Donjon Saint-Michel, two other towers mark the corners of Cucuron’s medieval defenses. The Tour de l’Horloge, with its charming wrought-iron belfry, once served as the main historical gate leading into the upper village. The Tour Sus-Pons was part of the 16th-century defensive walls. Also, don’t miss Portail de l’Étang, another well-preserved remnant of old village fortifications located just a few steps from the Bassin de l’Étang.

Cucuron is located about 35km from Roussillon or Aix-en-Provence, 40km from Gordes, 60km from Saint Remy de Provence, and 70km from Avignon. The most convenient way to get to Cucuron is by car.

To Cucuron by public transport
Unfortunately, public transportation options to Cucuron are limited. With no direct train connections to the village (the closest train stations are in towns like Aix-en-Provence or Cavaillon) your best option is to rent a car for the fastest and most comfortable journey.

Our opinion about Cucuron
For us, a visit to Cucuron was a day trip, combined with a visit to nearby Ansouis and Lourmarin, from Orgon where we lived for a few weeks. We visited in mid-May and during that time the village was very peaceful, with just a handful of other tourists around. Exploring everything we wanted at a relaxed pace took us about 2 hours.
Cucuron surprised us with its beauty and untouristy local vibe. Unlike some other popular villages in Provence, it has managed to keep its character intact. We really enjoyed wandering through the streets and admiring truly wonderful views from the Donjon Saint-Michel. To this day, we think of Cucuron as a truly wonderful hidden gem in Provence. Oh, and we came across quite a lot of cute cats so… Cucuron bribed us!
